At Dance Academy South West we offer teacher training for Imperial Ballet, Modern and Tap Dance with the Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education.  These courses can be studied on a part-time basis throughout the academic term and require attendance at the Centre for the practical units and guidance, support and tutoring on the written units.  The online learner management system, TOTARA, makes it possible for you to study the majority of the written units from home.

The DDE consists of 5 units:-

​

Unit 1 : Preparing for Safe Teaching (Research and short answer questions on the dance environment, health and safety, and teacher responsibilities; Pre-activity health-check and warm up; Risk assessment and nutrition resources; Portfolio of legal responsibilities; Anatomy - short answer questions) - 15 credits at Level 3

Unit 2 : Observations, Assisting and Teaching Practice (Four lesson observation reports; Five assisted lessons; Five lesson plans; Final filmed lesson and Viva with external assessor) - 30 credits at Level 4

Unit 3 : Intermediate Vocational Graded Examination in the genre (Practical Exam) - 28 credits at Level 3

Unit 4 : Dance practice in the genre (Practical Exam to evidence thorough knowledge of the syllabus and application of Unit 1 and Unit 5 in relation to teaching practice) - 30 credits at Level 4

Unit 5 : Social, Emotional and Cognitive Development (Growth and motor development resource; Learner profiles; Mission Statement; Promotional leaflet) - 17 credits at Level 4

DDE Modern Classes during term time are as follows:-

Tuesdays : 9.15 - 10.30 a.m. Intermediate (Unit 3)

10.45 - 1.30 p.m. Dance Practice (Unit 4)

1.30 p.m.  - 2.30 p.m. Assistance/Support/Tutoring for written units as required

Fridays : 11 - 12.45 p.m. Dance Practice (Unit 4)

DDE Tap Classes:-

Thursdays : 9.00 - 10.15 a.m.  Dance Practice (Unit 4)

10.30 - 11.45 a.m.  Intermediate (Unit 3)

Fridays : 9.00 - 10.45 a.m.  Dance Practice (Unit 4)

DDE Ballet Classes:-

Thursdays : 10.30 - 12.30 p.m.  Dance Practice (Unit 4)

1.00 - 14.30 p.m.  Intermediate (Unit 3) and technique class

Practical exams are held at the end of each term for these Units.  The centre also holds regional courses for the ISTD which are also useful for the DDE Student.

​

We also run DDE UNIT 4 INTENSIVE COURSES during holiday periods and Sunday Intensive Classes monthly if you are not able to commit to regular classes during term time.  (This is for Modern and Tap Only).
